in the nation to go car-free.
Arlington’s Car-Free Diet is the easy, fun way to live a car-free lifestyle. Each time you leave your car at home – choosing instead to ride transit, bike, walk or telework – you can save money, improve your health and clean our environment.
The Car-Free Diet encourages the curious to try it out by making it a fun experience and by providing support and resources to make going car-free possible. To keep “dieters” on track, calculators are provided to get personalized estimates of how much money they can save, calories they can burn and CO2 emissions they can reduce. Calculators are based on research conducted by other agencies and some basic assumptions. The Car-Free challenge has encouraged many people to give the Car-Free lifestyle a test ride. The “Car-Free Diet Skeptics Challenge” challenged Arlington residents to go car-free for 30 days. Contestants explained why they were skeptics and why they would be willing to go car-free. Two finalists were selected to compete. Each finalist used social media to document their experiences going car free.
