The Super Bowl isn’t all halftime shows and commercials. For a long time before the big game even begins, transportation professionals are working on plans to move thousands of people.
New Orleans officials say that communications is a key to make sure transportation options are available and move residents and visitors around the city efficiently. The city knows from experience. This will be the 10th Super Bowl hosted there.
Pedestrian traffic will be a bigger issue than traffic in New Orleans because of the huge amount of people flying in for the game and staying at downtown hotels not far from the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.
Also, a new streetcar line running between the French Quarter, the Superdome, and downtown opened this week and will get its first true test this weekend.
New Jersey and Arizona – homes of the next two Super Bowls to follow – already have transportation planners examining how New Orleans does it and are considering options for their transport networks back home.
