The Natural Resources Defense Council released a report today finding that commuters in the U.S. could save about $1,800 each year if they incorporated carpooling, public transit, or telecommuting into their daily transportation routines. By doing so, the report concludes they could reduce their total vehicle miles traveled by up to 50 percent.
Howard Jennings, director of Arlington, Virginia-based Mobility Lab, a global think tank that examines ways to reduce drive-alone car trips, says: “In Arlington County, we have invested in helping commuters become aware of their many diverse options. Through this work, we’ve documented 45,000 car trips shifted each work day into other forms of transportation.
“So not only can the initiatives noted in the NRDC report save people money and help clear the air, they can also make the streets less congested and improve individual and business productivity.”
