The Arlington County Planning Research and Analysis Team (PRAT) is responsible for maintaining, analyzing, and disseminating information related to planning in Arlington County. Among other research, PRAT develops and maintains official County employment and population forecast to better inform long-range planning and transportation decisions.
PRAT seeks to use demographic and transportation research findings to better understand the Arlington County community that it serves with the goal of improving civic engagement and outreach through programs that meet the needs of the community.
The most commonly-used research tools developed by PRAT are listed below.
Planning Information Reports (PIR): These include Demographic and Population PIRs, Development-Related PIRs, Planning Research Briefs (PRB), and Reports from Other Organizations.
- Major Planning Corridors – Demographic Trends: Examines trends among the Major Planning Corridors and Arlington County using the 2006-2010 American Community Survey 5-Year Estimates. The variables discussed in this document include: population, density, age generations, diversity, education, income, work place, means to work, time to work, and vehicle availability. Full data tables of these variables are provided in the appendix section.
Reports and Presentations: Arlington’s Past, Present, and Future: The Arlington County Planning Research and Analysis Team (PRAT) provides public access to important reports and presentations on the history, present, and future of Arlington County and the region. Reports and presentations are presented in accessible formats on topics such as demographic changes, employment changes, transportation patterns, real estate trends, and historical narratives.
Demographic Sources: PRAT supports the Department of Community Planning, Housing and Development (CPHD) in its mission to improve, conserve and revitalize Arlington’s physical and social environment. CHPD provides links to a wide variety of demographic resources, both from Arlington County and other sources. Of particular interest is the Mapping Center, Arlington County Commuter Services (ACCS), and Mobility Lab.
