One reason it might be difficult for people to drive less – besides sprawling built environments that make walking, biking, and transit all but impossible – is that people might enjoy their cars.
In particular, people might like to treat their cars like giant purses where they can dump anything they might possibly ever need for any situation imaginable. Feeling like you need to lug all of this stuff around might make it hard to switch modes.
