Arlington Sees Major Decrease in Vehicle Miles Traveled Amidst COVID-19

April 9, 2020

Data provided by StreetLight’s VMT Monitor shows that Arlington has seen an 85% reduction in total Vehicle Miles Traveled (VMT) compared to their baseline month of January. This is compared to an 88% decrease for Washington DC, and 86% decrease in Alexandria. On April 3rd, the total VMT calculated was 788,000 miles within Arlington County, just a month earlier on March 6th, StreetLight estimated the total VMT to be 7,140,000.

Arlington VMTTo look at changes over the month of March, Mobility Lab requested data from StreetLight and plotted VMT reduction over time in the graph below. Compared to January 2020, the decline started on March 9th, 2020, dropped 30% by the 10th and 74% by the 19th (just 10 days later). Note that VMT had already dropped by 86% when the shelter-in-place was order was made for Virginia on March 30th.
