Commute technology helps hospital go multimodal in new video

June 5, 2018

Arlington has a plethora of transportation options. The problem? Many commuters aren’t aware of them.

In our latest episode of The Switch, Mobility Lab used data compiled by the software Modeify to help employees at Virginia Hospital Center make the switch to multimodal transportation.

Modeify is a route-planning program that picks the best commute for each commuter. (You can try it out with Arlington’s CarFreeAtoZ website and app.) Old habits are hard to break, but Modeify makes it easy for commuters to see the health, financial, and environmental advantages of switching from driving their own car to sustainable transportation options.

Modeify’s heat-map technology revealed that hundreds of hospital staff lived within a 30-minute bike ride of the hospital, potentially allowing them to get exercise and fresh air while leaving their cars at home. It also found that 96 percent of employees lived within a mile of a potential carpool partner.

One of the greatest advantages of living or working in Arlington County is the wealth of transportation options to suit every need or lifestyle, allowing people to get the most out of their commutes. Whether you enjoy morning exercise on a bike, reading the paper on the bus, or carpooling with a friend, Arlington has you covered.

Also watch the first episode of The Switch, titled “Teachers leave behind their lonesome commutes.”
