International PARK(ing) Day – when people turn on-street parking spots into mini parks, called parklets – has passed. We are sad.
But instead of moping, we’re going to relive the glory of this past Friday’s outdoor celebration with these great photos of the parklets in Washington, DC and Arlington. Maybe you can get some inspiration for next year!
(Or, better yet, install parklets permanently…)
Arlington County’s parklet by Courthouse Metro station. Fun putting green!

Nando’s parklet in DC – they gave out free juice! Photo by our reporter Owain James.
AECOM’s parklet by Clarendon Metro station. The whole company worked together for two weeks to fold 500 paper cranes. “We wanted a sustainability theme,” said Lama Hasan of AECOM, “and we were inspired by Bird scooters.”
DC Department of Energy and the Environment dedicated their parklet to the future of the Anacostia River, where people might actually be able to go kayaking if pollution continues to go down. Our reporter Owain James is having fun!
The Association of American Medical Colleges set up a parklet in DC to teach people about medical school. Photo by Owain James.

A relaxing parklet hosted by Sparkfund in Adams Morgan.
Architecture firm HOK’s parklet right in the hustle and bustle of Wisconsin Avenue in Georgetown. Photo by our reporter Owain James.

Design firm OPX set up a parklet in Dupont Circle that asked what would make work better. Our reporter Owain James (who took this photo) wished he could walk to work!
Thank you to our writer Owain James for letting us use his photos. Check out his complete PARK(ing) Day adventure here.
